While the management staff generally has no problems in accepting English language User Interfaces, for systems that have to be used on the shop-floor level an Arabic interface is a must. Consequently, a substantial effort was put into translation of the relevant text into Arabic and into building an interface running on the Arabic versions of Microsoft Windows 3.11 and 95/NT.

The Arabisation of ‘UNIQUE’ deals with three categories of problems:

  • The general Arabisation problems, such as reversing menus and screens to suit the Arabic language general flow from right to left, in addition, of course, to writing from right to left due to the Arabic language nature.

  • The Arabisation problems of an already developed package:

translating labels and listbox items such that the Arabic word (or phrase) fits in the same size as the English word (or phrase) without corrupting the meaning,
getting around the difficulties of adding some necessary Arabic effect without damaging the source code.

  • The Arabisation of a scientific package with all its terminology translation problems.
